SOUTHERN PACIFIC

March spelled hard luck for the SP this year. The road had two major derailments within a week.

On March 13, and auto driven by Rindel Knisley of Santa Susana rammed through a barrier at the end of a street in Chatsworth. The auto struck the track, knocking a rail out of line. Minutes later a southbound freight hit the bad rail derailing 4 diesels and 47 cars out of 74. Crew members and the auto drivers were injured in the mishap.

Less fortunate were engineer R. M. Simmons of Pasadena and brakeman Peter Borgia of Los Angeles. They were fatally injured in a derailment near Tehachapi. In this one five diesels and 43 of 44 cars of the crack Starpacer carreened into a canyon.
